So You Want to Be a Midwife?
We’ve “Packaged Up” Our 20+ Years of Experience in the World of Birth to Show You What It’s Really Like to Be a Midwife and Give You the Tools and Understanding You Need to Take the First Steps in the Journey Yourself
Back when I started my first apprenticeship, I had zero experience. Calling me a “beginner” would have been quite an understatement.
I had birthed my own two babies (including my first home birth, which got me interested in midwifery), but other than that, I had no experience at all. At the time, I was a professional musician.
The midwife I started working with told me not to worry about my lack of knowledge. She told me to start reading and to study any issues or topics that came up with the women we were seeing.
That seemed like good advice, and that’s what I did.
But having an apprenticeship and raising two children made for a very busy life. And I never seemed to have time left to “hit the books.” When I did finally have a free minute, that’s when I realized this:
I Had No Idea What I Was Supposed to Be Learning!
Eventually, I would enroll in midwifery school. But at that time, I just wasn’t ready.
Looking back, I’m extremely grateful that I found an apprenticeship at all. Since I had no experience, I was probably more work for my midwife teacher than a help to her at the beginning.
Now that I am almost 15 years into my midwifery journey, I see that the opportunities most people have for apprenticeships are few and far between. And sometimes, those opportunities can be competitive.
(I myself probably wouldn’t even consider a student that hadn’t invested SOMETHING in learning, even if she wasn’t quite ready yet to enroll in a midwifery school program like the one we offer at Indie Birth.)
Because there really are NOT a lot of learning opportunities for women who are considering midwifery, or already learning in an apprenticeship, we sat down and put one together for beginning midwives and apprentices all over the world.

How to Be a Great Apprentice Outline
During an apprenticeship, your relationship with your teacher midwife is key. To make it strong and sustainable, you need to understand the responsibilities that come with your role. Our outline of “apprentice responsibilities” will help you see how your journey may be shaped, help you fully accept your responsibilities as you work with a midwife.
The Student Midwife Primer
One of our main goals here at Indie Birth is to create a stronger, smarter, more diverse network of independent midwives. We created the Student Midwife Primer e-book as a way to field the long list of questions we get about how to become a midwife. The response to this resource was amazing! There is so much confusion, so many paths, and so many obstacles to becoming a midwife. The Student Midwife Primer will help you cut through the clutter and take a big step towards your goal of serving your community from the heart.
