Margo and I didn’t know that when we started, but we know it now. We don’t need to convince anyone to agree with us. Just look around at the midwives and you can see the truth. Look at the burnout. Look at the lack of integrity between internal truths and external actions. Look at the unresolved trauma that gets projected onto mothers, that affects birth outcomes, that even leads to disease years down the road.
We don’t want any part of it. Which is why we closed the original Indie Birth Midwifery School after eight years of operation. It was an amazing program. Something that still stands alone in its breadth, depth and focus on serving women.
But it wasn’t enough.
Over the past few years, both Margo and I experienced birth situations that are probably best be described as “really hard shit.” We weren’t weekend “birthkeepers.” We were both experienced, well-trained midwives. Both had years-long apprenticeships. Both had years and years of experience practicing. That didn’t matter. It was during those days, some of which were very dark, where we both realized all of the things we were missing in the training of a midwife. We came face to face with a missing set of skills, abilities and capacities that would have better prepared us to navigate the reality of what it means to be a midwife. There is no changing what it means to walk this path. Beware anyone who insists that “birth always works.” It works until it doesn’t. And a midwife must be present and powerful for all of it.
The solution is to fully prepare. To develop the skills most midwives will never even know are important. This is the way that you can avoid what we have had to experience.
We want that future for you. We want your journey to be easier and smoother than ours.
The midwifery that has been here, collectively for the last few decades feels old, done and tired.
Some midwives are only a few steps away from OBs. They practice with endless interventions and hold babies up like trophies for the camera. Other midwives think any form of real training or experience is unnecessary. They believe birth just “works,” and that if a mother doesn't get the outcome she wants, the mom did something wrong and should be punished.
You can agree or disagree with these extremes. It doesn’t matter. They are all stories. Someone’s opinion about how birth is supposed to go. About how we can control it. About how we can get the outcome we want.
Somewhere in the middle are the women. The women who are ready for support from someone who has the capacity to walk with them through the sacred initiation of birth.
Knowing the skills does not make you a midwife. Becoming a midwife is a journey into a new state of being. It takes time, humility, hard experiences, great experiences, integrity and depth.
Being a midwife is not about taking on more than you should or feeling more than is yours. Some midwives were taught that is helpful, that it means you are “listening” or holding space.
It is not helpful. It is the sign of a birthworker without the capacity to carry the energy around birth. The goal is not to take on the woman’s load, it is to become comfortable in the mess.
It is not your job to fix it, it is your job to be present with it, to witness what her body does, what dots allow her to connect her patterns, and to remind her, above all else, that she is f*cking amazing.
Working in this way is what it means to be a midwife. It is a journey of empowerment that reminds you of your own power and shows you that women who access power in their bodies can and will change their own lives.
Midwives are not superheroes. We are not here to save anyone or make public displays of our brilliance. We are here to be an ever-present support for women passing through the sacred initiation of birth.
Your ability to serve women in this way is directly affected by your capacity to be whole in your own body. To be able to BE with yourself, with what you carry on the inside. The current models of midwifery lead to serving women at the expense of your own well-being.
This why the “midwife life” is largely unsustainable. It leads to burnout. It leads to emotional exhaustion. It leads to your own fears getting projected onto the women you serve. It influences your choices about the care you provide based on your own unresolved trauma from past birth experiences or stories you’ve collected from others on the same journey.
Neglecting to develop your own internal world is a disservice to the very women who depend on your ability to lead them through birth.
Eight years ago, we created a midwifery school that brought together the worlds of the sacred and the scientific. While this brought together two worlds in a way that most midwifery training (still) ignores, it did not address what our experience showed us required to truly serve women.
This goes beyond what you know and how you think to the very core of WHO YOU ARE BEING.
The Indie Birth School of New Midwifery is about creating a whole person who can serve women, fully, deeply, completely. This requires a set of skills and abilities that no currently available midwifery training provides.
Our curriculum is designed to lead you from the foundations of autonomous midwifery into the art of being with women in their deepest moments. This is not about memorizing the facts, it is not about getting through the lessons and checking off the boxes, this is about transferring experience and wisdom acquired from decades of study, living and serving, supported by both ancient traditions and modern research.
Each of the 24 courses is designed to span about three weeks, but you will receive full access to the entire program as soon as you enroll. You can view the entire curriculum here. (Students will also receive complimentary access to the Sacred Birth Certificate program.)
You will not find this unique combination of skills, knowledge and wisdom development for a midwife anywhere.
The best way to become a better midwife is to work on yourself. The Indie Birth School of Midwifery was created to help you do just that.

The New Midwifery completely reimagines what it means to learn, work and live as a midwife. With the proper skills, knowledge, understanding and capacity, you can enter into this world and experience something quite unlike the quality of life of the midwives who have come before us.
Imagine a path where you have the tools to process the fear. Where you have the ability to remain present with a woman without carrying the emotional weight of her story. Where you have a well-developed connection to your own Divine intuition. Where you’ve refined a balanced relationship between your clinical skills and your greater awareness. Where it is clear to everyone that you do not control birth outcomes, that you are not a savior, that you walk with women not for them, that you can offer a stable support to the women you serve.
While you will be enrolling in a cohort, you will be able to work through the material at your own speed, in your own time, for up to three years. In addition to the curriculum, you will also have access to live coaching calls, every other week, with real midwives. This means you can come with questions, stories, hopes, fears, or other requests for help processing or integrating what you’re learning. This allows you to “get out of your head” and be in the energy of midwives who embody this “new midwifery” and have done (and continue to DO) “the work” required to show up in a new and more powerful way for women. It is important that you FEEL this and WITNESS this so you can understand the type of BEINGNESS that you can provide to the women you serve. This is not something you get with your mind, this is something you embody with all that you are. Even though it is beyond words, it is palpable and obvious when you feel it.
24 Courses (View Full Curriculum) + Complimentary Access to the Sacred Birth Certificate program.
Live coaching calls every other week with real, experienced midwives, plus access to the private Telegram group. (You can continue to attend these calls even after you complete the program.)

No, this is an online program only. While an apprenticeship is not part of this program, we do believe that a real, in-person apprenticeship with a practicing midwife is a necessary and vital step for anyone who wishes to call herself a midwife. From our perspective, there are virtually no exceptions to this requirement.
If one payment is not practical for your situation, feel free to contact us to arrange a plan that works for you. Access to the school will not be granted until the full enrollment is paid.
No. We do not want students who are not committed. If you are unsure that this is the right path for you, or you have reservations about anything concerning who we are or how we view, do or teach this work, please follow your own truth and do not enroll. Pay attention to the clues that this is not for you.
There is no way to compare. The Indie Birth School of New Midwifery is built by real midwives. It is focused on supporting women in a way that no other option provides. This is not the ultra-woo "womb wisdom camp" where the belief is that no interventions are ever needed. This is also not medical midwifery that treats birth like a disease or a disaster waiting to happen. And this is definitely not the “become a midwife in 7 days” type of thing where you start calling yourself a midwife if you know how to meditate and listen to a woman talk about herself. This is something new. Something better. Something deeper and more masterful that prepares midwives to serve women in a way that is powerful and profound.
This is an updated, expanded and dramatically improved version of the original school. Our understanding of what is needed to support women has grown over the past decade. We ourselves have acquired new tools, new approaches, new ways of being that can help midwives better serve women. This means we have built upon our marriage of the sacred and scientific and added a deep exploration into the physical and inner world of the midwife herself. Not only does this allow for a complete shift in how you show up for the women you serve, but it will allow for a transformation of your own experience of being a midwife. (If you are a current student of the school, you will receive a private communication explaining how to access some of these new resources.)
