Once Baby Is Here, the Role of Most Doulas Comes to a Close - the Keepers of the 4th Trimester Have the Skills, Knowledge and Ancient Understanding to Support a Mother Through the Final Stage of Her Birth Initiation

From: Maryn green
CO-Founder, indie birth association

Once the breast infection started, I realized that something was off. It was painful, it was hard, and it took over a week to heal. Dealing with that while trying to care for a new baby and navigate the bizarre mixture of darkness and light that you encounter in the postpartum is not something I would wish on anyone.

After the birth of my first son, Egan, I spent much of my early postpartum visiting with family, taking my baby out around town, and getting back to “normal” life as quickly as possible.

At that time, I didn’t yet understand what wise women have known for many generations: that the postpartum is not just the beginning of the life of a new child, it is, for the mother, the final stage of the initiation that is birth.

Ancient cultures understood the magic of this time. Examples of that knowledge are found all across the world. In Indonesia, new mothers do not emerge from the home for a full 42 days!

Sadly, our society has largely forgotten this magic. When the baby comes and the days of happiness and celebration are over…when the partner goes back to work and the relatives return to their own lives…the new mother is often left alone to walk on a path mixed with thoughts and emotions that are not present together during any other time of life.

Journey with me, Maryn Green, to explore the deeper layers of what the postpartum time has to offer us...

What is the price a woman pays who walks this path unprepared, unsupported, with little attention offered during this most sacred part of the rite of passage of birth?

The price she pays is profound. It comes in the form of how she feels about the birth of her child, how she chooses to mother that child, and how she experiences what is really the rebirth of her own self.  Not to mention the vitality and health of her entire body for decades to come.

We also pay a price, as the community of women around her. We are the very women who could have offered the unique type of support required to completely transform a mother’s experience of the postpartum. When that is not offered, we miss an opportunity to fulfill a sacred calling in the days and weeks following the birth of a new child.

There is no greater satisfaction than sitting with a new mother during this time knowing that you are playing a vital role in preserving the sacred magic of the postpartum. You are actively contributing towards the creation of a better world, a brighter world, a world where the honoring of life and the being who brings it forth is regularly practiced.

It was not until the birth of my ninth child, almost 15 years after the birth of my first son, that I realized the sacred magic that exists during the postpartum for those who have the understanding and support to receive its wisdom.

I am writing this message to call in those who are ready to join me on a mission. A mission to restore the active practice of this postpartum knowledge for the benefit of the coming generations of women and their children.

The magic will first be passed to you, just as it was passed to me. And from there, you will spread it throughout your community and into the world where it will transform the experience women have during their postpartum.

The time has come for us to restore our work of guiding the mother through her period of rebirth in the days and weeks following the birth of her child.

Over the past 20+ years, I have sat with thousands of women during their postpartum period. I have seen the tears of joy. I have witnessed the telling of the birth stories through bleary eyes. I have held those who cried tears of grief and sadness, those who expressed anger, resentment and disappointment at a birth experience that fell short of expectations. I have held space for the looks of confusion and the emptiness that exists even in the abundance created by healthy new life.

I have prepared the food, I have served the drinks, I have washed the dishes. I have discovered what is required to fully nourish a new mother physically, emotionally, spiritually. The role of the postpartum doula requires a far more expansive and deeper set of skills than most understand.

Receive the Wisdom That Comes
From Sitting With Thousands of Women
During the Postpartum Period

An Opportunity to Transform the
Lives of Women You Serve

There’s a difference between how things should go in the days following birth and how they do go. In previous generations, when life was simpler and slower, perhaps the honoring of the postpartum period was something that received more awareness and attention.

But that is not the reality we live in today. Not only has the busyness of life crowded out the sacred space for a mother to process her birth experience, it has trained her caretakers to pay attention only to the practical matters in the hours or days after birth.

The celebration and nourishment of the very giver of life has been moved to the background and the mother left to navigate the postpartum period pretty much alone.

Most doulas receive little to no training in exactly how to support a mom during the postpartum period. Yes, they can advocate for a woman in a hospital setting. Yes, they can support a woman in her labor at home.

But when it comes to supporting a woman during the postpartum, the unique combination of skills and abilities required to help a woman navigate that emotional, spiritual and physical landscape receives little to no focus.

The time has come to fully honor the importance of the postpartum. That’s why Margo and I have created something to help train the keepers of this sacred magic of the “fourth trimester.”

The program we created is called...

To be clear, there is no other training available that combines the ancient knowledge of navigating the postpartum with the deep and varied practical experience that comes from sitting with thousands of women during that time. The is not a program created by doulas for doulas. It is a program that grew out of the experiences of midwives who have been practicing the art of sacred postpartum care for many years.

Our goal is to truly provide new stewards of this magic with the tools they need, not only to nourish women on a physical level, but to witness and support the emotional and spiritual parts of this journey.

The Mothering the Mother program is designed to effectively guide you towards becoming a type of postpartum doula that is currently found in very few places. This is a confident caregiver who honors and celebrates a new mother and nourishes her on multiple levels as she emerges from the birth of her child and steps into a new and more powerful version of who she is meant to be.

Mothering the Mother: Becoming a Keeper of
the Sacred Magic of the 4th Trimester

The program is very comprehensive, detailed and meant to be worked through over a period of months.

During the program, we WiLL

Connect with the vital nature of the postpartum period. Develop a deep understanding of why this time is so physically, emotionally and spiritually important to a woman and her future health.

Map the obvious and hidden complexities of the postpartum period. Words can’t truly describe the space in which a new mother lives during the days and weeks after birth.

Discover carious ways to help a mother honor the placenta and further nourish herself (including placenta encapsulation), physically and emotionally, with this profound sustainer of life.

Get clarity on the reality of the postpartum. The landscape of the postpartum is an entirely different “painting” for each mother. From rapid physiological changes to integrating the reality of never being able to return to a “pre-pregnant” version of yourself, you’ll learn about the skills you need to help a mother move through this time of dramatic change with grace.

In addition to all of the program material, you’ll also receive other resources for you to use that address topics including fertility awareness in the postpartum, loving your postpartum body, getting to know the “new” you that emerges after birth, resources about tongue ties and even an entire “postpartum workshop” that is ready for you to present in your community.

You’ll also receive access to our live student calls we host! You can show up, get your questions answered and receive whatever support you need to move forward on your journey as a postpartum doula.

Prepare for the drastic shifts that can occur in a new mother following birth. We’ll review things like the importance of the first “fantastic” hour after birth, learning how to help a mother navigate the “funk” that often accompanies days 3-5 of postpartum and more.

Take a detailed journey through the first few weeks of motherhood. While that time is unique for each mother, you’ll be shown what “normal” looks like and how to spot the signs that additional attention to specific areas of a mother’s care might be needed.

Learn all about pelvic care, sex after birth and other topics you need to understand to support a mother in her healing and rebuilding after birth.

Develop an understanding of the journey a mother takes in the years following the birth of her child. This program is about supporting women in ways that will forever impact the quality of their future.

Specific steps for helping a new mom prepare for the fourth trimester and creating a plan to explore the richness of the postpartum period.

Understand how to help a new mom create the environment for optimal breastfeeding. From helping with low milk supply, failure to thrive or any of the ways that nursing can feel hard, you'll be ready to support her in doing what she is made to do.

Explore the connection between the amount and quality of support in the postpartum period and its effects on various challenges during that time. We’ll look at how women are physiologically designed to receive love and support.

Outline that practical aspects of what a postpartum doula, one trained in the many layered journey that is the fourth trimester, actually DOES.

Teach you about the unique situations for moms who birthed via Cesarean. You’ll learn about that healing process and things you should be aware of that will inform the care you provide.

Walk you through some of the most common challenges you might experience during the postpartum, including developing the capacity to hold space for birth stories, all about postpartum depression or similar feelings in partners and ways to help a mom support her own mental health and wellness.

Cover Ayurvedic perspectives, including herbal wisdom, on nourishing a mother after birth. We have a lot of experience preparing these foods, watching them function in their support of moms after birth and even in our own postpartum experiences.

Restore ritual and ceremony to the fourth trimester. For example, for most of our time in midwifery, we have been making and offering postpartum herbal bath mix tea to every woman that we serve. We brew the tea during labor, and afterwards the mama can take a bath when she likes. The benefits of these herbs include relaxation, reduction of swelling in vaginal/perineal area, antiseptic/cleansing, and preventing infection. You’ll learn how to prepare this bath and how to use it to help the mothers you work with.

Learn all about the art of vaginal steaming and how to use it to support the health and healing of the mothers you serve.

What Mothering the Mother is NOT:

Mothering the Mother is not about training you to become a midwife. This work is not about addressing anything related to excess bleeding, signs of infection (mom or baby), unusual pain, extreme nursing difficulties, lethargic baby etc. These are all issues that are under the domain of a trained midwife.

This program is focused on leveraging the experience of midwives in their own sacred postpartum work, to help you better nourish and support mothers through this magical and profound part of the birth initiation.

The good news is that you don’t need previous doula training to benefit from this program. Becoming a postpartum doula is choosing to play a very unique role in the life of a mother. This program will prepare you well to serve, even if you’ve never had prior doula training.

This is a role you can play whether the mothers you serve birth at home or in the hospital. The postpartum time is a rich and magical time where you can offer support no matter what choices were made about the actual birth.

Mothering the Mother is about training postpartum doulas to be the wise, experienced, loving but powerful “grandmother” figure that most communities used to have but are sadly missing. Playing this role is not a function of age, it is a function of WISDOM.

Maryn listens and loves truly-she moves with sacredness and honesty.

She is able to hold a mirror, hold your hand, and hold the space that birth deserves. Being able to celebrate my birth experience with her postpartum felt warm; as in a cup of tea, nourishing; as in a leg massage, and full of love; as in a sister and friend willing to listen and help hold any bits needing extra attention. I am forever grateful.

I just wanted to reach out and tell you how much that impacted me.

One of the things that really stood out to both of us was when you guys came back the day after Shiloh was born to check in with us and you offered to rub my feet while we chatted about all the postpartum things. As we were talking about it I got the biggest lump in my throat and tears in my eyes as I recalled that moment.

I felt so seen and held in my postpartum.

I was able to plan a slow, nourishing postpartum and give myself permission to heal and rest deeply in the early weeks. Maryn has nurtured and guided my spirit through out the entire first year of my baby’s life and beyond. So grateful to be so well supported in the first year of my son’s life and to have found a community of women to continually uplift me in the mothering years

The type of care and support she receives during that time plays an enormous role in determining WHO she will become. If you have a sincere desire to help women and completely transform the future of our world, we invite you to walk this path.

That is the very reason we created this. Helping women navigate the magic of the postpartum time has been overlooked for too long. This offering is intended to train doulas to supply the support and guidance required for women to claim the power that is waiting for them after birth.

MY PREVIOUS DOULA TRAINING DIDN'T MENTION MUCH ABOUT THE POSTPARTUM. IS IT THAT IMPORTANT?

All enrollees will receive lifetime access to the course and any upgrades or improvements we make in the future. You can enroll and work through the course as time allows. There's no rush.

Should i enroll even if i don't have the space to go through the training right now?

Mothering the Mother is intended to be worked through at your convenience. Someone who is really motivated could complete it in a matter of weeks, others may take months or longer.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO COMPLETE THIS TRAINING?

To our knowledge, no other doula training is available that combines the understanding of the ancient magic of this time with the experience that comes from sitting with thousands of women.

DO I NEED THIS IF I'VE ALREADY TAKEN OTHER DOULA TRAININGS?

Our training is based on our experience serving thousands of women during their postpartum. What you learn over 20 years of that work is not found in any other training that is available.

HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT THAN OTHER POSTPARTUM DOULA TRAININGS?

No. Mothering the Mother is a standalone offering that focuses solely on preparing you for work as a postpartum doula.
