Multidimensional Midwifery in the Prenatal Period:How to Prepare Yourself For Prenatal Complications
With Maryn Green
Midwives work with normal, healthy women.
What happens when a complication in pregnancy develops? Do you have the knowledge and skill to recognize and deal with what’s happening? Would you know how to refer care? Do you have a multi-dimensional perspective on these issues to help you REALLY walk with a woman in this place?
The midwifery textbooks don’t do a good enough job of illustrating what it’s like to handle prenatal complications or unique health situation. So many of the issues we will cover in this class (from pre-eclampsia to bleeding issues to cholestasis) are more than just the physical. We can use signs, symptoms, labwork and all of the technocratic tools to recognize them but how do we truly support her?
If you don’t have these skills, and you are a midwife or a student midwife, you are missing out.
Midwifery nowadays HAS to be so much more than the emergency measures and the textbook protocol. We need to be able to think, use our intuition and our HEARTS to truly serve women; especially those that are experiencing prenatal complications.
Learning about complications in pregnancy only from a textbook can be really lame.
These scary complications feel so mysterious; what if miss them? Most of the available information comes from the medical model, where complications are out of our control AND are random and only of the physical plane. If you are a midwife, or a student midwife, you deserve a more multidimensional approach to this topic.
You want to not only recognize complications, but prevent and treat (naturally if possible).
You want to have access to all the latest theories, information, research and numbers in combination with having looked at your own fears and hang ups. Caring for women, especially in stressful situation, requires that we have ALL the information available to us; on the inside and on the outside.
This will not be a boring class of numbers and lab diagnosis (only). This WILL be a class that asks you to dig deep within yourself and see each woman and potential complication for what it is.
A Long List of Multimedia Resources Focused on Building Your Skills and Confidence
We will be using video, media, research, anecdotal stories, discussions with our peers, assignments, journal entries, case studies and more to get to a place of confidence and peace with this topic of scary stuff.
“I liked that there were various teachers, including mothers. It was helpful to hear different views, especially from those who experienced something personally that we were learning about. I feel like this course was challenging for me in that it was more in depth and involved, integrating a lot of knowledge with skills. Being that these are skills that are better-learned in time and with hands-on practice (as is pretty much any skill), I just went with the flow and learned what I could, knowing I’d get more experience in my apprenticeship eventually. Some of the stuff I already have been practicing/learning, which was helpful when listening to the lectures, being able to connect the dots on a more personal level.
For the workbook, I’ll be honest, I didn’t use it once – I actually completely forgot about it, which saddens me because I was so excited about it at the beginning!! I’m probably going to look back and see what I missed out on and how it could have helped me soak in knowledge better. However, even though I didn’t use it, I did end up on learning tangents on my own, which was great!
Thank you for your time and wisdom!!” – Jillisa, IBMS student
