We are mamas and birth workers who decided to do birth differently– and bring others along with us. We are kind, fun to work with, and great at (lovingly) calling people on their bullshit. With 12 children and 20 years of midwifery between us, we’ve learned a thing or two along the way, and Indie Birth is our space to share it all with you.

  1. Heidi Fillmore says:

    Hi Maryn and Margo,
First thanks for opening this conversation about the direction that midwifery is going and your hopes for this. This type of discourse is so important and are happening less and less lately outside of the on-line emotionally heightened forum that some midwives participate in which I often find toxic and destructive to our profession.
Elevate is a good term to use for all of us as we strive in our lives to rise above the divisiveness of our current world.
As an elder midwife who has been practicing continuously for 36 years, I wanted to give you feedback on how I received your latest podcast titled “Midwifery is broken”. I know you did not intend this, but from my perspective it was a bit patronizing, lacked nuance, and fell into the category of things you seem to be trying to call out. It does not feel helpful to the dialogue to make sweeping judgements/conclusions about a group of
midwives and dismiss a generation as perpetuating “old paradigm bullshit”. This approach seems in danger of perpetuating the same divisiveness we so desperately need to heal. Our differences as midwives are not generational, and promoting that will not help us. Differences in practice, training, philosophy, spirituality, style exist and hopefully will always exist as midwives arise to serve their particular communities. I guess I just wanted to ask you to include different voices, not expect conformity, seek out and listen to the rainbow of possible ways to be midwives as you mentor and facilitate conversations in our community. Thank you again for your work in creating conversation.
