One day I was working on a flyer for my holistic birth and wellness services. I was googling images of pregnant bellies when my 5 year old daughter came over to see what I was up to. She stood next to me and quietly watched as I experimented with different images, until I stumbled upon a photograph of a mother whose belly was wrapped in a bow. I was about to move on to another picture, when my daughter stopped me. This is the conversation that followed:
“Why is there a ribbon wrapped around that mommy’s belly?” Isys
“Because a baby is a gift.” Me
“Why?” Isys
“Because it’s miraculous how a woman’s body can support another life, grow it inside of her and bring it into the world.” Me
“What’s miraculous mommy?” Isy
“Miraculous is something that is a miracle. A miracle is an amazing thing that happens that gives us proof that there’s something bigger than ourselves.” Me
“So since I am your baby, I am your miracle?” Isys
“Yes.” Me
Isys laughs.
“You’re talking to a miracle right now.” Isys
In our day to day lives it can be easy to forget the miracles both great and small that surround us. Moments like these put everything in perspective for me, and I come back to them when I need to be reminded.
