Today I have spent a lot of time in personal reflection about what the midwifery path BEHIND me has looked like and what the path ahead might have in store for me.

This is partly because we are smack in the final days before a new cohort of midwifery school students begins, and with that, I’ve heard from a number of excited, nervous, amazing women who have decided that NOW is the time for them to embark on this part of the journey. Some of them know (or think they know) where they are headed, and others are trusting that they will figure it out as they go.

When I started apprenticing as a midwife in 2011 and enrolled in midwifery school later that same year, I knew without a doubt (as much as anyone can know anything) that I was going to be a midwife.

Within a matter of weeks of learning about home birth midwifery, I dropped out of grad school, where I had a professor who promised me that he would be able to secure me a semi-lucrative career in domestic violence policy work in Washington DC once I finished. And as rad and sexy as this seemed at the time, it didn’t feel right at all. The choice was crystal clear to me.

But what that meant and how my midwifery path would look is COMPLETELY different than I ever would have imagined.

Since I made that decision….

I have trained two apprentices of my own (one is finishing up with another midwife).

I have served over 100 women in birth, and impacted the experiences of many thousands more through teaching and inspiring their birth workers.

I have taught close to a thousand midwives and doulas in our two main programs.

I helped host 3 huge Indie Birth conferences that brought together birth workers from around the globe, and I get to see the friendships and networks that were created continue to flourish.

I have also taught dozens of free classes, and hosted many birth worker retreats and weekend workshops.

And I have reached literally millions of people just through my own birth video of Celosia, not to mention all the social media exposure, podcasting, etc.

My point here is that you have no idea where this path will take you or how it might change your life and the lives of others when you say “yes”. I sure as heck didn’t know this is how it was going to go (I literally didn’t have a smart phone when I started learning midwifery 🤣).

It served me SO WELL to have heeded the call when I first heard it at the ripe age of 21 years old. Think of what the impact might have been if I had decided to stay the easier and more stable course.

If you know you need to say yes to the Indie Birth Midwifery School and you’re ready to do it head over here to get started on your application.
Love,
Margo
