We are mamas and birth workers who decided to do birth differently– and bring others along with us. We are kind, fun to work with, and great at (lovingly) calling people on their bullshit. With 12 children and 20 years of midwifery between us, we’ve learned a thing or two along the way, and Indie Birth is our space to share it all with you.

With 5 children of her own, Francoise ‘ Mamacita’ Souverville, a Certified Childbirth Educator since 1982, began practicing midwifery in 1972, has assisted more than 2000 births in hospital, home, and nature, and created ‘Preparation for Men’ as a means to transform the attitude of birth in the family.

After playing a decisive role in the establishment of a maternity clinic in southern Arkansas in the early 1980’s, Mamacita organized workshops and conferences toward establishing midwifery legislation in Arkansas, and subsequently worked with the Arkansas Department of Health in forming their rules and regulations.

Having been published in two books, Special Delivery by Rahima Baldwin, and The VBAC Experience by Lynn Baptisti Richards, Francoise has spent her life sharing her knowledge, taking on apprentices, training midwives in the US and Europe, and confirming the tremendous benefits of waterbirth as established in Igor Tjarkovsky’s research on waterbabies.

Below in this week’s shownotes, I have included links to various articles Francoise has written for the publication “Midwifery Today,” as well as articles and podcast episodes from Indie Birth on water birth.
