Meet the duo behind Indie Birth
We are mamas and midwives who decided to do birth differently– and bring others along with us. We are radical, fun to work with, and great at (lovingly) calling people on their bullshit to help move us all towards a new more beautiful world. With 12 children and over two decades of midwifery between us, we’ve learned a thing or two along the way, and Indie Birth is our space to share it all with you.

Hey Ladies! What about using a fetoscope during labor to determine if the heart rate is dropping and if medical intervention or relocation to a hospital is ideal? I am new to understanding the principles of unassisted birth and with your website, so possibly you’ve covered this elsewhere. Thanks!
My opinion…don’t be your own midwife during labor. It takes years of training to be able to listen and interpret and so much more. Hire a midwife that is competent with using a fetoscope during labor if you are concerned. This is not the opinion of unassisted birthers, per se, but as a midwife (who has had unassisted births myself!) I would never attempt to listen and interpret my own baby in my own labor. I’ve relied on my intuition regarding baby’s condition as well as other signs.
Hi Maryn,
Can you mention some of the other signs you look out for, if you choose not to use the fetoscope while your in labor?
Thank you!
Hi Sara! Signs of what?
Thank you for the great video, ladies! I wondered if you could comment on the difference of sounds you might here if the placenta is anterior?
