My first experience with Young Living essential oils began with Peace and Calming and Stress Away, a couple of blends that helped me deal with lack of sleep and excess stress. I was newly pregnant with #7, we had just moved across the country (with plans to move back again) and I was having trouble sleeping at night. Add to that other normal life stresses, and I was feeling like I couldn’t cope much longer. I spoke to a midwife friend who suggested the oils, and although I had been using essential oils for years, nothing was helping with the sleep problem. I went through the Young Living catalog and was overwhelmed at first. But 2 blends called out to me, and I realized I didn’t have too much to lose (I have been using essential oils on my children for years, so I figured they wouldn’t go to waste even if I didn’t like them).

Early pregnant meant being very sensitive to smells, so I wasn’t sure how I’d react to either blend. However, I fell IN LOVE with Peace and Calming, immediately and ever since! This is one oil I always have around, and always go through really quickly. Literally the first night I used it (a couple of drops on the back of my neck), I fell asleep and did not wake up middle of the night, like I had been. In subsequent nights, I did wake up a couple of times but applied more P &C and fell right back asleep. The cool thing about this oil for me now is that even just getting a sniff of it relaxes me noticeably. I’ve also used it on the kids and even the baby (on bottoms of his feet) and it seems to chill them out too. The blend contains a mixture of tangerine, orange, ylang yang, patchouli and blue tansy. This is also one of my most favorite oils to diffuse in the bedroom at sleepy time. (When oils are blended it creates sort of a new entity of sorts, although I “think” it is the ylang ylang that makes this one so luscious!)

Needing double duty for the stress situation, I also found solace in Stress Away. This one is so different than Peace and Calming even though they are both for releasing tension. I really smell the lime and vanilla in this one (in addition, there is copaiba, cedar wood, ocotea and lavender.) Such a unique scent…something about the woodsy cedar wood that just helps take the weight off of your shoulders. I didn’t use this one for sleep, but just applied liberally to my neck and shoulders when I was feeling the pressure. It helped noticeably; to the point where I started carrying it around and at least a couple times, passed it around in the car for everyone. This blend is one my husband particularly liked as well; I think it’s less “feminine” than the Peace and Calming and he agreed. Also, a couple drops can be taken in water as well as used in a diffuser for room use.

If you are experiencing tension (who doesn’t, at least occasionally?) and need something to calm your nerves or help you sleep, these are 2 great blends to start with. See how they work for you and how your body reacts to these amazing plants. Essential oils of this quality are such an amazing gift from Mother Nature!

Hi! I’ve recently gotten into homeopathic/botanical remedies that can be used during pregnancy as well as post-partum. I’m on the path to becoming a holistic midwife and want to offer traditional services as much as possible. Do you have any websites, books, etc. you would recommend?

P.S. Just want to say that I love everything you wonderful women are doing and am so inspired by the work you do!
