  1. Kimberly Prusso says:

With my #3 Baby, 1st VBAC I was to Birth at Upland birthing center inCalifornia, in 1988 with Dr. Rosenthal with midwives. It was during the time When VBAC’s were rarely allowed in US. So after being educated reading all I could about VBAC’s and outta hospital births, in my mind I was prepared for a water birth. When I went into labor and realize that this was going to be a lot more painful than my first birth And I walked into the facility in transition and the ladies asked me to squat on the floor to have the baby???? I told himI was going home unless I got into the tub Lol. When I got into the tub of course it slowed things down which made the pain more manageable. I agree with you at first I felt like I was a caged animal, mainly because I had our four children (2 were step) watching me (like a movie ) ????also my husband, two midwives and my parents videotaping. It felt very invasive. so I just eventually went into the Primal mode and I was able to get past that, but yeah I definitely felt like a caged animal.. It was Large Built in birthing tub so it was very comfortable as I loved baths and I pretty much delivered him myself with the midwives standing by. With my future births I delivered at a freestanding birthing center on a little twin bed, I hated that. Next baby I decided to take things into my own hands so my number five baby home birth , I was trying to birth on the end of the bed, but we had shoulder dystocia so my midwives encouraged me into the hands and knees position which mentally I was already opposed to before labor, but baby needed to come out and he did of course! (10 lbs. 4 oz. 24 inches long !)The next homebirth I did get in the bath tub at one point to get away from everyone but it was very small tub when I realize the baby was coming as I stood up to step out of the tub the fetal ejection reflex took over in a very small bathroom! it was kind of comical as the midwives and hubby all trying to catch him! My last homebirth I delivered in bed I think because it was a really small room a big bed a lot of people and I just felt comfortable there. So I agree with you I think it’s more a matter of what you feel comfortable with at the time in labor and different circumstances. Thank you for your podcast I appreciate your your views! My children are all grown and I am now a labor and birth Doula!!
