There are many ways to skin a cat.

It’s a weird saying, but it’s not one I hear much in the world of birth or by those who have a “birth business”.

It’s not common to acknowledge that there are many ways to arrive at the same place; whether that is becoming a doula, a midwife, or even to create the birth of your dreams.

For many, it’s dogmatic thinking and “this is the best and only way” offers. Unfortunately, many of them ultimately scare or shame women into doing the thing. Buying the thing, or following the leader.

We have spoken so openly, for example, about the many ways to become a midwife. So much so that it has become confusing, because it’s not black or white. It is so nuanced. Licensed midwifery isn’t “bad”; but it’s not right for me, and I believe that mandatory licensing is not serving women and families and limits options.

But it IS an option; and many of the women that become licensed midwives make the most perfect match to that paradigm. It’s not one we want to help further, but it IS a way to become a midwife, and it’s truly not better or worse.

It just depends what the focus is, and if we are looking at only the individual, or the macrocosm of society.

Birth is the same. There are many ways to create an awesome birth, and many tools and resources these days (I say tooo many) that say they can help.

What may help one woman, won’t help another. And who cares, really, if collectively we are moving the needle ahead on powerful women birthing in their autonomy?

At the end of the day, no one actually knows what the best way to skin a cat is.

No one knows how YOU should become a midwife, or what school you should attend or who should attend your birth, or where you should birth.

Anyone that wants to sell you their perfect solution is either wearing blinders, or only out to make money, or maybe doesn’t have the experience to know that no one knows anything at all:)

Where does that leave us?

Only with your own internal compass, and your own knowing and intuition. It’s true these things sometimes have to be unwound from fear and trauma….but for many women, they will eventually know when they know.

I’m always here cheering women on who have consulted with their Highest Selves (Soul, God, etc.) and aren’t just following the herd but have a need to listen deeply to Divine instruction.

These are the women here, in this community, and we are so grateful to you and for you.

Oxoxo
