Indie Birth Midwifery Skills10 Week Course
Feel Confident in the Sacred Skills of Midwifery
When we were student midwives, there were hardly any resources that focused on midwifery SKILLS from the perspective of someone who believes that birth works most all of the time, but also believes that these sacred skills are worth having and offering to the women we serve when needed. There was often so much focus on “we really never need to do anything” from that corner of the birth world that we were left wondering, “Ya but what about when we DO need to do something?”.
The resources that DO exist are mostly highly medicalized, and lack the wise woman nuance we bring to every conversation. Many skills weekends and online overviews focus on rote memorization but exclude the deeper conversations about when, how and why to use a particular skill (or why not as the case often is). What does the mother want? What does it mean to make ANY skill routine in our care? The resources out there are very black and white, and largely superficial.
So, if you want to understand these skills, but don’t want to slog through material that doesn’t feel like it fits your midwifery philosophy, this awesome TEN WEEK Midwifery Skills Course is for you. It includes everything from taking vitals, to managing a shoulder dystocia, including venipuncture and IV skills, which many of our student came in saying they were interested in, but were ultimately glad to learn about even if they won’t use them! Concrete skills are one of the areas that so many student midwives want to feel more confident and more well rounded in. We completely believe that you can learn these skills through apprenticeship and real life, hands on practice, but we also know that having a structured introduction into them ahead of time can make the process feel a lot less intimidating.
As always we have readings, videos, podcasts and opportunities for reflection to help give you the richest experience possible.
More specifically this class explores the following topics:
– taking vitals
– fundal height
– prenatal fetal heart tones
– assessing labor progress
– vaginal exams
– venipuncture, IV placement + rectal fluids
– interpreting fetal heart tones in labor
– *shoulder dystocia
– *postpartum hemorrhage
– *neonatal resuscitation
– placenta exams
– using Eldon cards
– newborn exam
*These are all 1 week overviews, which are excellent, but we also have 10 week courses that address these topics more in depth if that if what you are looking for.
**Many of our lovely students have expressed that they did not want to learn IV skills, but after learning more and opting to practice at the skills workshop they are always amazed at how empowering it is to know that this skill is not out of reach for us, and can be part of the sacred toolbox if we want to add it.
Course Runs May 3rd through July 12th
Indie Birth Midwifery Skills Course
This course will take you through the what, when, how and most of all WHY (or why not!) of all the basic midwifery hands-on skills. You will finish this class having a solid understanding of the best way to take a blood pressure reading, why we listen to fetal heart tones, how to insert a urinary catheter. We hope these initial teachings provoke questions about deeper learning that you will bring to our in-person workshop. If you are just taking this course to review hands-on skills, it will prepare you for testing and becoming more proficient.
(NOTE: Courses begin May 3 and you will have exactly 10 weeks of access to complete the course.)
